Intro to Children's Ministry Leadership Today

Educating and ministering to children, regardless of whether it is in a secular aspect or within the church,  has dramatically evolved over the past 25 years.  Effective children's ministry requires an evolution in the role of a children's ministry leader.

In the beginning a children's ministry leader was a teacher. And it was good.

Leaders gifted to teach children understand how to teach, or instruct, and understand children themselves.

Today, the majority of children's ministry leaders rarely spend time in the classroom, requiring a different skill set and gifting.

A leader's schedule quickly becomes filled with guiding and managing the ministry team itself, and includes:
Public relations with the parents
Coordinating ministry with the other groups within the church
Keeping up with technology for the latest curriculum, security, parent notification, and other administrative requirements
Understanding teaching methods that correspond with various learning capabilities within the children
Being aware of and preventing legal matters
Knowing health issues and requirements
And, being able to counsel or guide families, children, and the team itself.

How do we empower children as CHILDREN'S MINISTRY LEADERS today?

Jesus gave practical yet profound ministry leadership advice in John 21:15-17 (NLT):
"After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?"
“Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.”
“Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him.
Jesus repeated the question: “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
“Yes, Lord,” Peter said, “you know I love you.”
“Then take care of my sheep,” Jesus said.
A third time he asked him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was hurt that Jesus asked the question a third time. He said, “Lord, you know everything. You know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Then feed my sheep.

Effective children's ministry (feeding the sheep) requires leaders who are supernaturally gifted and talented in leadership and management.

What do we look for in a children's ministry leader?
